Established in 1964 in the area of Chapultepec Park, the Museum of Modern Art (MAM, by its Spanish acronym) is one of the most important of its type in Latin America. The building was designed by Pedro Ramirez Vazquez in collaboration with Carlos A. Cazares and Rafael Mijares.

The museum’s collection, that adds up to two thousand works, offers visitors a wide and rich panorama of the evolution of the fine arts in Mexico at the second half of the 20th century. The works are mainly paintings and sculptures belonging to the Mexican School of Painting and the Breakaway Generation (Generación de la Ruptura): José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Dr. Atl., David Alfaro Siqueiros, Manuel Rodríguez Lozano, Leonora Carrington, Juan O’Gorman, Jesús Guerrero Galván, Carlos Orozco Romero, Manuel Felguérez, Alfredo Zalce, Gunther Gerzso, Lilia Carrillo, Remedios Varo, Olga Costa, Frida Kahlo, Francisco Corzas, Francisco Toledo, and many others.

The works are exhibited in several rooms in this beautiful building which is surrounded by a sculpture garden, inspired in a design by Matsumoto, where visitors can admire works by Ángela Gurría, Luis Ortiz Monasterio, Mathias Goeritz, Manuel Felguérez, Germán Cueto, Juan Soriano and Jesús Mayagoitia, among others.

Among the most important individual collections are those of Rufino Tamayo (25 works) and Remedios Varo (38 works). The valuable collection of photographs by Manuel Alvarez Bravo is particularly special. For half a century, the Museum of Modern Art has been a permanent space for the most outstanding forms of expression of contemporary art, with numerous international exhibits.

Visit the MAM Modern Art Museum on Reforma Avenue, corner of Gandhi, very near to the Rufino Tamayo Museum. It has a cafeteria, gift shop and a library specializing in modern and contemporary art, with a collection of eight thousand volumes. Visiting hours are from 10:15am – 17:30pm.
